The moving guide / Preparation

A calmer move starts before moving day.

From your first list to the final walk-through, use this practical guide to plan around your home, schedule and access.

01 / The quote

Start with the details.

Share your pickup and delivery suburbs, preferred date and an approximate inventory. Mention large or fragile items, stairs and lifts at both addresses, and how close a truck can park.

Ask what is included, how time and travel are charged, whether minimums or extras apply, and what happens if your plans change. Request the terms in writing before booking.

02 / Your checklist

One stage at a time.

Use the timing as a guide and adjust it to your circumstances.

01

Before you book

  • List furniture, appliances and boxes, noting large or delicate items.
  • Check access, stairs, lifts and parking at both addresses.
  • Compare written quotes and ask about insurance and exclusions.
  • For apartments, ask building managers about permitted moving times, loading-dock bookings and vehicle-height limits at both addresses. Share any restrictions with your removalist.
02

In the weeks before

  • Sort belongings and organise boxes and packing supplies.
  • Label and number boxes by room, keep a simple inventory, and photograph fragile or valuable items before packing as a condition record.
  • Arrange utilities, address updates and mail redirection as needed.
  • Discuss dismantling, packing help and special items before moving day.
03

On moving day

  • Keep keys, medication, documents and essentials with you.
  • Clear walkways and explain access or parking restrictions.
  • Check cupboards and rooms before leaving.
  • At your new address, direct items to their rooms and check your belongings.

Ask about arrangements and cover before you book.
03 / Before you pack

Some things need a little more planning.

Ask your removalist about appliances, heavy items, plants, pets, valuables and items that cannot be transported. Follow appliance and packing manufacturers’ instructions, and keep hazardous materials out of ordinary moving boxes.

Insurance varies by policy. Ask what cover applies to your belongings, any exclusions and excess, and how to report damage.
